HC Deb 09 May 1977 vol 931 cc328-9W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what arrangements he has made with the Renault Company for the purchase and conversion of cars for use by disabled drivers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The Department buys Renault 4s on discount terms as required for issue to elegible disabled persons for whom our standard issue car, the British Leyland Mini, is not suitable and for whom a Renault 4 is medically prescribed. Any necessary adaptations of the foot controls to hand operation is carried out by a specialist firm—Reselco Ltd. of Hammersmith—which has been under contract to the Department for such work for many years. At present, there are about 500 Renault 4s on issue to eligible disabled persons in the United Kingdom.
