HC Deb 02 May 1977 vol 931 cc52-3W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is his policy towards increasing democratic activity and the development of trade unions in the Armed Forces; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wellbeloved

The present arrangements for the administration of the Armed Forces have been developed to suit their special circumstances and tasks. They provide for the views of individual Service men to be taken into account. The system of safeguards and reviews on which these arrangements depend appears to be working satisfactorily. Service men may join trade unions provided their membership does not bring them into conflict with the requirements of military discipline.
