HC Deb 02 May 1977 vol 931 c33W
Mr. Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will now propose new safety measures for motorways, in view of the increasing number of accidents, fatalities and injuries taking place on them.

Mr. William Rodgers

Motorways remain much the safest roads on which to travel. The rate of accidents has in fact gradually fallen over the last seven years, and in 1975 there were 10 fatal or serious accidents on motorways per 100 million miles travelled, compared with 32 on other roads outside built-up areas. We are continuing to improve older stretches with lighting, safety barriers and modern signalling and to remind drivers of ways to avoid accidents.
