Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what has been the spending on war and contingency stocks in total and for each of the Services in each of the last 10 years in current prices.

Dr. Gilbert

Estimated expenditure on war and contingency stocks over the period 1968–69 to 1977–78 is as follows:

1976 expressed in £ sterling at prevailing exchange rates.

Mr. Mulley

On the common NATO definition of defence expenditure, the information is as follows:

regret that the further details requested on past vacancies are not available.

In addition, of the 97 married quarters at Marchington 84 are currently vacant. Of these, 82 are in the hands of the Property Services Agency for disposal as surplus to defence requirements. The balance will similarly be offered for disposal between now and March 1978 as they become vacant. Many of these have been vacant or occupied only intermittently since 1967 due to uncertainty about the further Defence use of the other facilities at Marchington.

Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Service families are currently housed in specially built houses and flats in Great Britain; what figures are available for the cost of decorating and maintaining these houses and flats; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Gilbert

On the latest available figures, 81,278. Expenditure on maintenance, including decoration, by the Property Services Agency in 1975–76 on all married quarters in Great Britain was £21,533 million.
