Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he pays the fees of inspectors in highway inquiries.

Mr. Horam

Inspectors for trunk road inquiries are appointed jointly by my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for the Environment and Transport. As a matter of administrative convenience the inspectors' fees are paid by my Department, which also meets the cost of other highways inquiries.
