HC Deb 15 March 1977 vol 928 cc145-6W
24. Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps she proposes to take to improve the educational prospects of disabled children.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The Department will fund research expected to start in the autumn to evaluate a number of local schemes to integrate handicapped children in ordinary schools; and will be discussing with local education authorities, teachers and others concerned the implementation of Section 10 of the 1976 Education Act. My right hon. Friend also proposes to prepare and issue guidance on the design of educational buildings to allow for wider use by disabled children and others; and to amend the school and further education building regulations to include reference to the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970.
