HC Deb 04 March 1977 vol 927 cc358-60W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) how many persons are employed in the Inland Revenue in making income tax repayments;

(2) how many persons are employed in the Inland Revenue making tax refunds as a result of information supplied on Form P45 leaving certificate.

Mr. Robert Sheldon,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 3rd March 1977; Vol. 927, c. 320], gave the following information:

Repayments of income tax form part of the work of many Inland Revenue officers, both in tax offices and in other offices of the Department. The overall cost of this work is estimated to be the equivalent of about 2,800 full-time staff. Of this cost, about one-third represents work arising in cases where forms P45 are used.
