HC Deb 04 March 1977 vol 927 c332W
Mr. Warren

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will investigate what proposals could be made available from British Railways Research and Development Division to facilitate the transfer of coal by automatic or semi-automatic trains to carry the scheduled 10 million tonnes of coal per year between the Selby coalfield and the three power stations nearby which the field will supply.

Mr. William Rodgers

The use of equipment designed by British Railways Research and Development Division to permit the automatic control of "Merry-go-round" coal trains during unloading is currently being evaluated at Egg-borough power station near Selby. I will consider carefully any proposals for similar research which the Railways Board may suggest could be included in the research programme jointly sponsored by the Board and my Department.
