HC Deb 01 March 1977 vol 927 c163W
22. Mr. Forman

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied with the current rate of unemployment in the area surrounding and including the London borough of Sutton.

Mr. Golding

No. That is why the Government have introduced a number of special employment measures, including the temporary employment subsidy scheme, which replaced the recruitment subsidy for school leavers, and the job creation and work experience programmes. Altogether these have so far helped 15,500 people in London.

It has also been decided to increase training facilities, especially in South London, and there are plans for the provision of four new skillcentres in London, including a new specialist office training

* Because of industrial action at local offices the regular counts of the unemployed and notified unfilled vacancies were not made. Unemployment figures for this months are estimates based on a simplified counting procedure.

The vacancy figures relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices and are not a measure of total vacancies. Because of possible duplication, the two series should not be added together.
