Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what was the numerical strength of the Royal Ulster Constabulary on 31st December 1972 and at the same date in each of the years until 1976;

(2) how many retirements from the Royal Ulster Constabulary took place in each of the years 1972 to 1976;

(3) what was the number of resignations from the Royal Ulster Constabulary in each of the years 1972 to 1976.

Mr. Dunn

The information for the years 1972–75 is contained in the Chief Constable's Annual Report, copies of which were, I understand, made available on publication to the hon. Member. The strength of the force on 31st December 1976 was 5,253. There were 69 retirements and 106 resignations from the RUC in 1976.
