HC Deb 20 June 1977 vol 933 c376W
Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will indicate those items wich fall under the headings of preventive medicine concerning dietary control with the particular expenditure allocations for the years 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 and up to the latest available date.

Mr. Moyle

Help and advice on diet and nutrition is, of course, frequently given by doctors to their patients; more general information is provided by various health professions including health visitors and health education officers as well as by dietitians. Separate figures for the cost of this work are not available.

Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will outline his proposals to ensure adequate information for the public on dietary control and heart disease.

Mr. Moyle

As indicated in the Consultative Document "Prevention and Health—Everybody's Business", prepared jointly by the Health Departments of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and published last year, a series of more detailed papers on specific aspects of prevention are to be published. The series will include a paper on the significance of diet for health which, amongst other things, will discuss the dietary factors relevant to heart disease.
