HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 c588W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales whether it is still in the Government's intentions to seek to dispose of radioactive waste material in areas of geologically stable rock formations in North Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Barry Jones

At this stage the Government have no plans to dispose of radioactive waste into geological formations in any part of the United Kingdom. I would refer the hon. Member to the reply of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Energy on 2nd February last, in which he stated that proposals actually to use geological strata for disposal would be made only after the fullest consideration of all the safety and environmental issues including wide consultations—and on the basis of a conclusion that it would be safe to do so.—[Vol. 925, c. 209.]
