HC Deb 28 July 1977 vol 936 c377W
Q15. Mr. Robin F. Cook

asked the Prime Minister if he will issue directions to permit public access to the indexes and register of information held by Departments which have not yet been deposited in the Public Record Office.

The Prime Minister

No. It has long been the practice for Departments to allow, at their discretion, bona fide research workers and others with a genuine interest access to official records which are not classified or held in confidence. So far as I am aware, Departments continue to offer every reasonable facility for such access, within the constraints of effective and economical administration; but if my hon. Friend has any particular problem in mind, I will arrange for it to be considered.
