Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will indicate the principal areas in England and Wales in which coastal land is being lost to the sea as the result of erosion; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Marks

The principal areas of coastline in England and Wales in which coastal land is being lost to the sea as a result of erosion are North Yorkshire, Humberside, East Anglia, Kent, Sussex, the Isle of Wight and the Christchurch Bay area.

Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will estimate the total area of land lost as the result of the erosion of the coast by the sea for each year from 1970 to the present.

Mr. Marks

No national records of the areas of land lost as a result of the erosion of the coast by the sea are maintained.
