HC Deb 27 July 1977 vol 936 c304W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether she will give the number of teachers and those employed in the education services who were at 1st July, receiving a salary and allowances £135 or more per week.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The latest available information on salaries of teachers is related to the academic year 1975–76. From that basis it is estimated that about 30,000 of the 557,500 teachers. head teachers and lecturers currently employed in maintained schools and grant-aided establishments for further education in England and Wales and in universities in Great Britain receive £135 or more per week in salaries and allowances.

My Department has no information on the individual salaries of teachers in independent schools or those, other than teachers, who are employed in the education service.

Teachers and lecturers in Scotland other than those in universities are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.
