Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will provide the most recent figures available on the numbers of overseas students, studying in the United Kingdom, who are sponsored or financed by (a) the British Council, (b) the Ministry of Overseas Development, and (c) overseas Governments.

In the calendar year 1976. 2,138 overseas students were sponsored or financed by the British Council and 13,302 by the Ministry of Overseas Development. These figures comprise students on all types of courses. The number of students supported by overseas Governments is not available, but some 8,000 were known to be supported by overseas Governments or overseas scholarships in 1975.
