HC Deb 27 July 1977 vol 936 cc313-4W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of persons employed in his Department who were on 1st July in receipt of salaries and expenses of £135 or more per week; and if he will give similar details for those employed in the police services.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The number of persons employed in the Home Office on 1st July whose basic pay and other pensionable emoluments totalled £135 or more a week was 920.

Police officers may, according to rank and circumstances, receive, in addition to basic pensionable pay, non-pensionable allowances such as rent allowance. These vary from officer to officer. Information on the number of officers in receipt of pay and allowances of £135 a week or more could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. The basic pensionable pay of officers of the rank of chief superintendent and above, and of some superintendents, is £135 a week or more. On 31st May 1977, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 924 officers in England and Wales of chief superintendent ranks and above. Information on how many superintendents receive basic pensionable pay of £135 or more a week is not available.
