HC Deb 21 July 1977 vol 935 cc702-3W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will compare the average earnings of underground miners in Great Britain and Germany and also compare the labour costs per ton of coal raised in each country, both expressed in European units of account.

Mr. Eadie

In 1975–76 average earnings per manshift worked by underground miners in Great Britain were 29.3 EUA (European Units of Account). In Germany average earnings per underground manshift worked for in 1975 were 31.3 EUA. EUA conversion rates used are those of 1st October 1975. In 1975–76 labour costs in Great Britain were £8 per ton of deep-mined output. Comparable figures for Germany are not available.

Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will compare the output per employee in the coal mining industry with that in West Germany.

Mr. Eadie

Average annual output per worker—man-year—in the coal mining industry—hard coal only—in the United Kingdom and Germany in 1975 was as follows:

  • United Kingdom, 481 metric tons
  • Germany, 683 metric tons

Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the output per employee in the coal mining industry for 1970, 1972, 1974 and 1976; and what this is as a percentage of the 1970 figure.

Mr. Eadie

The figures are as follows:

Average Annual Output per employee (OMY) OMY expressed as a percentage of 1970
tons figure
1970 461 100.0
1972 394 85.5
1974 399 86.6
1976 445 96.5
