§ 26. Mr. Evelyn Kingasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average size of a parliamentary constituency in Inner London; and what is the average size of a county constituency in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.
§ Mr. JohnOn the basis of the provisional 1977 parliamentary electorates, the average size of a parliamentary constituency in Inner London is 52,054, and of a county constituency in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset is 73,509, 62,098 and 68,909 respectively.
§ 33. Sir D. Walker-Smithasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the failure of the procedures of the House of Commons (Redistribution of Seats) Act 1949 and the House of Commons (Redistribution of Seats) Act 1958 to avoid a disparity between the electorate of any constituency and the electorate quota, he will introduce legislation amending those Acts so as to provide procedures which will achieve equity in the distribution of seats and fair representation for electors.
§ Mr. JohnMy right hon. Friend has no plans to introduce amending legislation, but he is willing to consider any suggestions for improving the present review procedures.
