HC Deb 14 July 1977 vol 935 cc205-6W
27. Mr. Michael Spicer

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is satisfied with the state of prison officer morale at Her Majesty's Prison, Long Lartin.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I very much regret that prison officers at Long Lartin Prison should have thought it necessary to take industrial action in support of their demands for changes in the manning arrangements of the prison. I am particularly disappointed that they should have intensified their action at a time when agreement had been reached in respect of a number of their demands and the remainder are under discussion with the Prison Officers' Association at national level. I hope that agreement on the outstanding issues will soon be reached and that staff will resume normal working in the meantime.
