HC Deb 04 July 1977 vol 934 cc466-7W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied with the observance of safety standards on the forecourts of self-service petrol stations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Grant

Under the Petroleum (Consolidation) Act 1928 it is for local authorities to attach to any petroleum spirit licence for which they are responsible such conditions concerning safety requirements as they think expedient. Guidance about safety standards is provided to petroleum licensing authorities in the Model Code of Principles of Construction and Licensing Conditions for Petrol Filling Stations. In addition to general recommendations the code contains advice which is specially applicable to self-service stations. Most local authorities require these or similar principles, and I have no reason to suppose that the safey standards thereby imposed are not being generally observed.
