HC Deb 18 February 1977 vol 926 cc392-4W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many days were lost (a) directly in strike action and (b) indirectly as a result of stoppages &c. caused through strike action in 1974, 1975 and 1976.

Mr. Golding

The statistics show that the aggregate number of working days lost in stoppages in progress in the years 1974, 1975 and 1976, were 14,750,000 6,012,000 and 3,286,000 respectively. The figure for 1976 is provisional.

The official statistics of stoppages of work due to industrial disputes include: (1) workers directly involved in the disputes; and (2) workers indirectly involved who, although not themselves parties to the disputes, are laid off at establishments where the disputes occur.

The series compiled for working days lost consists of the aggregate of days lost
