Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many defence research establishments and bases there are in Wales, and what is the purpose of each and the number of people employed in each.

While it is not the usual practice to give detailed information about individual establishments there are about 9,700 directly employed civilians including those in the Royal ordnance factory organisation, and about 6,700 Service men serving in a hundred or so defence establishments. The principal ones are:

RAF St. Athan—Aircraft Storage and repair and training.

RAF Valley—flying training.

RAF Sealand—Electrical engineering servicing.

RAF Brawdy—Tactical weapons training.

P & EE Pendine—Proof and trials of weapons.

RAE Aberporth—Trials of guided weapons.

ROF Cardiff—Ordnance factory.

ROF Glascoed—Ordnance factory.

RNAD Trecwn—Ammunition storage.

RNAD Milford Haven—Ammunition storage.

RNSD Llangenech—Naval stores depot.

The Welsh Depot, Crickhowell—Infantry Division Depot.
