Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons in Northern Ireland are currently employed in security and protection of property; and what this represents expressed as a percentage of the work force of the Province.

Mr. Mason

Excluding the security forces, the approximate number of civilians in Northern Ireland currently employed in security and protection of property is 5,400. This figures represents about 1.1 per cent. of the number of employees in employment in the Province.
