Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons are currently imprisoned in Northern Ireland; and what are the comparable figures for a convenient date in each of the last eight years.

At 13th February 1977 there were a total of 2,720 persons imprisoned in Northern Ireland of whom 138 were borstal trainees. Comparable figures at the end of January in each of the last eight years are as follows:

employed by local authorities in Wales on a direct labour basis; and what proportion they comprise of the total engaged by local authorities for construction and maintenance purposes.

The number of operatives engaged on construction work by local authorities in Wales on a direct labour basis as at October 1976 was as follows:

Repairs and Maintenance 10,860
Information is not available about the number of operatives employed by contractors on local authority work.
