Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what arrangements there are in his Department to monitor regional news programmes on television and local radio to keep him and senior civil servants informed of regional news and opinion.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

Her Majesty's Treasury maintains close contact with the London correspondents and head offices of the major regional radio and TV companies. In addition, local radio and TV broadcasts are monitored by a number of commercial organisations, and the Information Division of Her Majesty's Treasury obtains transcripts or tapes of programmes of interest for study and for action when required.

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many copies of the following newspapers are purchased by his Department in order to keep himself and senior civil servants informed of public opinion and how many copies of each paper purchased are northern editions: The Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express, the Daily Mirror, The Times, the Financial Times, the Yorkshire Post and the Birmingham Post.
