HC Deb 14 February 1977 vol 926 c54W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many special schools which treat problems of dyslexia have been recognised as efficient.

Miss Margaret Jackson

There were in January 1976 2,328 independent schools, of which 1,350 were recognised as efficient by my Department. The latter included 85 schools which catered wholly or mainly for handicapped pupils, but none of these was specifically for children with reading difficulties.

Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what guidance has been given by her Department to local education authorities concerning recognition of certificates of diagnosis and recommendations for appropriate education for pupils handicapped by dyslexia received from medical and psychological personnel in private practice or in hospital service during the years 1970 to 1976.

Miss Margaret Jackson

None. It rests with individual local education authorities to assess the information before them in reaching decisions in these cases.
