HC Deb 14 February 1977 vol 926 cc19-20W
Mrs. Brain

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will list in the Official Report the locations of Government cartographic centres, indicating the numbers employed in each establishment and the type of work undertaken in each.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

Some 4,400 cartographic grades are employed in approximately 250 different locations. The four principal centres are, however, the Ordnance Survey at Southampton, the Directorate of Military Survey, at Feltham, and the Hydrographer's Department, at Taunton.

The number of staff and the work done at these establishments are matters for the departmental Ministers concerned, but the records held by my Department suggest that the number of cartographic staff at each is as follows:

Ordnance Survey, Southampton 1,700
Directorate of Overseas Surveys, Kingston upon Thames 260
Directorate of Military Surveys, Feltham 330
Hydrographer's Department, Taunton 370
