teacher-pupil ratio in Welsh primary and secondary schools.

Mr. Barry Jones

The number of pupils per teacher in maintained schools in Wales in January 1977 was as follows: Primary, 227; Secondary, 17.

Mr. Michael Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what is the teacher-pupil ratio in bilingual primary and secondary schools in Wales;

(2) what is the teacher-pupil ratio in Welsh-medium primary and secondary schools.

Mr. Barry Jones

In January 1977, the latest date for which information is available, the pupil-teacher ratio in designated bilingual primary schools was 24.2:1 and for designated bilingual secondary schools 16.6:1. In traditionally Welsh speaking areas there are many other schools which, to a greater or lesser extent, use Welsh as a medium of teaching. Separate data for these cannot be provided.
