HC Deb 16 December 1977 vol 941 cc566-7W
Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for Transport to what extent his Department makes use of Giro facilities; what is the estimated annual value of such Giro transactions; and what regular consideration is given to extending the use of Giro.

Mr. William Rodgers

About £100 million of receipts come though Giro each year; virtually all of these are in respect of vehicle excise duty and driving licence fees. Payments of expenses by Giro amount to £0.8 million each year. Bills are paid by orders drawn on the Paymaster General. Payments of salaries and wages are made by the Department of the Environment on behalf of my Department and were included in the reply given on 12th December by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment.—[Vol. 941, c. 25–6.] My Department's methods of paying and receiving money are revised regularly taking account of cost, efficiency, convenience, acceptability and other relevant factors.
