HC Deb 16 December 1977 vol 941 cc596-7W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his policy towards the treatment of pregnant women by electro-convulsive therapy; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moyle

The medical treatment of a patient is a matter for the clinical judgment of the consultant concerned, in the light of the particular circumstances of each individual case.

Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what advice he has received on the effect on the foetus of electro-convulsive therapy administered to a mother during (a) the first trimester, (b) the second trimester and (c) the third trimester, respectively; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moyle

I have received no relevant advice.
