§ Mr. Ron Thomasasked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if he will introduce regulations which effectively ensure a high standard of maintenance and regular inspection of any tankers or other vehicles which are used for transporting dangerous substances by road; and if he will introduce legislation to seek to empower the police to stop and prevent further movement of any vehicle suspected of not meeting those standards;
(2) if he is satisfied with existing regulations concerning tankers and other vehicles transporting dangerous substances by road, and in particular that they (a) clearly indicate the substance being carried and (b) prevent one label being used irrespective of the substance being carried.
§ Mr. HoramI understand from the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that the proposals it is preparing for new general regulations controlling the conveyance of dangerous goods by road will include provisions relating to the maintenance and periodic inspection of dangerous goods vehicles and for adequate enforcement.
