HC Deb 15 December 1977 vol 941 c394W
Miss Richardson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the net cost of increasing the main national insurance benefits after two years on benefit by £3–35 for a couple and £2 for a single person assuming that (a) the unemployed continue to receive unemployment benefit so long as unemployment lasts and that after six months unemployment benefit is paid at the same rate as invalidity pension and (b) the unemployed receive the long-term rate of supplementary benefit after two years on supplementary benefit; what would be the net cost on the assumption that the long-term supplementary benefit rate paid to all claimants under pensionable age after six months and after 12 months on supplementary benefit; and what would be the effect of these proposals on the numbers dependent on supplementary benefit.
