HC Deb 15 December 1977 vol 941 cc312-3W
Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he proposes for the relief of unemployment in the Malton area of North Yorkshire, in the light of the recent heavy redundancies in the bacon curing industry affecting the town and its environs.

Mr. Grant

I was concerned to learn of a number of proposed redundancies in the bacon curing industry in the Malton area. The main form of assistance that my Department can offer in such cases is the temporary employment subsidy, and the firms involved are aware of this scheme. For any redundancies that do occur the Manpower Services Commission will do all it can to help the workers affected find or train for new jobs. The special employment measures introduced by my Department have so far helped over 660 people in the Malton area, and we would welcome any fresh applications for the youth employment subsidy, or under the new youth opportunities programme and special temporary employment programme which are being introduced in 1978.
