HC Deb 14 December 1977 vol 941 cc276-7W
66. Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the present level of employment in the British Railways workshops; and what are the prospects for employment in these workshops for each of the next five years.

Mr. William Rodgers

I understand from the British Railways Board that its workshops currently employ about 35,000 people. Employment prospects over the next five years depend on a number of factors, but I hope that rolling programmes of investment which I have authorised, and the export orders which continue to be won, will help to provide a steady volume of work.
