§ 66. Mr. David Priceasked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the present level of employment in the British Railways workshops; and what are the 277W prospects for employment in these workshops for each of the next five years.
§ Mr. William RodgersI understand from the British Railways Board that its workshops currently employ about 35,000 people. Employment prospects over the next five years depend on a number of factors, but I hope that rolling programmes of investment which I have authorised, and the export orders which continue to be won, will help to provide a steady volume of work.
