HC Deb 14 December 1977 vol 941 cc274-5W
53. Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received about the distance limits to be placed on certain categories of goods vehicles from 1st January 1978.

Mr. William Rodgers

Representatives of the road freight industry have pointed out the difficulties of complying with the 450 km. daily distance limit applicable under EEC Regulation 543/69 to drivers of single-manned vehicles with trailers or semi-trailers over 20 tonnes authorised total weight not using a tachograph. I recognise the problems caused by the limit, which was, however, accepted by the United Kingdom on accession to the Community.

57. Mr. Blaker

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he has yet received any reply from the Commission on his Department's proposals concerning the European Economic Community Regulations relating to drivers' hours.

Mr. William Rodgers

I refer to the Answer I gave earlier today to the hon. Member for Hereford (Mr. Shepherd) and the hon. Member for Macclesfield (Mr. Winterton).
