Mr. Palmer

asked the Secretary of State for Industry when he will announce the names of the members of the committee of inquiry into the engineering profession; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Varley

I am pleased to be able to announce the names of the members of the committee of inquiry, which will be chaired by Sir Montague Finniston. The terms of reference of the committee were contained in my answer to my hon. Friend on 5th July.

The following people have agreed to serve on the committee:

  • Miss Catherine Avent: Careers Guidance Inspector, Inner London Education Authority
  • William Buckley: Principal, Warrington Technical College
  • Tom Crispin: Secretary, Engineering and Power Trades Group, Transport and General Workers Union
  • Herbert Darnell: Director of Engineering, British Steel Corporation
  • James Dawes: lately Divisional Controller, Rolls Royce Ltd.
  • Dr. Joseph Dickenson: Director, North Staffordshire Polytechnic
  • Professor John Horlock: Vice-Chancellor University of Salford
  • William Howie: General Manager, New Civil Engineer
  • Dr. Bryan Lindley: Managing Director, Electrical Research Association
  • Major-General Hugh Macdonald-Smith: Director of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Army
  • William McCall: General Secretary, Institution of Professional Civil Servants
  • Sir James Menter: Principal, Queen Mary College, London University
  • Henry Nelson: General Manager, Transmission Bearing Division, Ransome, Hoffmann, Pollard Ltd.
  • Dr. John A. Powell: Managing Director, EMI Ltd.
  • Mrs. Elizabeth Sadler: Ove Arup Partnership Professor David Weir: Dean, Scottish Business School
  • Mrs. Jean B. Wilson: Mathematics Adviser, Tayside Region

The committee's first meeting will be held on 20th December 1977, and I would hope to receive its report early in 1979.
