HC Deb 13 December 1977 vol 941 cc157-8W
Mr. O'Halloran

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether any lessons have yet been learned from the neighbourhood management trials sponsored by his Department.

Mr. Freeson

It is too early to make a final assessment of the individual neighbourhood management trials which my Department is supporting at Liverpool, Newcastle upon Tyne, Kirklees, Dudley, Stockport, Haringey, Middlesbrough and Islington. The monitoring team at the Institute of Local Government Studies has, however, produced an interim report on the relevance of neighbourhood and other area-based management to tackling urban deprivation. The report, "Tackling Urban Deprivation: the Contribution of Area-Based Management", has been published this week and includes a summary of guidelines for local authorities. I commend the report and am arranging for a copy to be placed in the Library of the House.
