HC Deb 13 December 1977 vol 941 cc146-7W
51. Mr. Lipton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimated cost to public funds of feeding, clothing, educating and caring for a year-old illegitimate child born in the United Kingdom whose parents have disappeared or been deported and who has no relatives in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Moyle

I regret that information in the form requested is not available. However, according to the Social Services Statistics estimates, published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, a copy of which is in the Library of the House, the average net cost of keeping a child in a residential nursery provided by a local authority in England and Wales in 1977–78 is £9823 per week. Similarly, the average net cost of boarding out a child of any age is £12.01 per week.
