HC Deb 01 December 1977 vol 940 cc306-7W
Mr. Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will introduce regulations to make long-distance coaches carry passenger lists.

Mr. Horam

No. I am not aware that the carriage of passenger lists on long-distance coaches would serve any useful purpose, except in the case of international closed-door tours for which provision is already made in the Road Transport (International Passenger Services) Regulations 1973 (1973 No. 806).

Mr. Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what consideration he has given to incorporating roll bars in the design of motor coaches; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Horam

Coaches now manufactured in this country already incorporate structural members which are capable of acting as roll bars. These enable the roof to withstand the full weight of the vehicle up to a maximum of 10 tonnes, which is the current standard laid down by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. However, the Government are taking part in discussions of possible more stringent requirements.
