HL Deb 26 April 1977 vol 382 c545WA
Lord CHELWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will summarise the present position of all EEC Member States, including the United Kingdom, on the question of holding Direct Elections to the European Parliament in May or June 1978, showing in each case the stage reached in draft legislation and when it is expected to become law.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

My Lords, I refer the noble Lord to the reply which I gave to his Question on the 9th March. Since then I understand that the Italian Parliament has completed the necessary procedure for the adoption of the Community's direct elections agreement and that the Federal German Government is expected shortly to present draft legislation to the Bundesrat. Her Majesty's Government have published a White Paper which is being debated in another place and which will be debated in your Lordships' House on the 3rd May.
