HC Deb 21 April 1977 vol 930 c137W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the size of the gasoline market in the United Kingdom and the expected drop in sales following the recent additional Budget levy on the product.

Dr. J. Dickson Mabon

In 1976, 16.9 million tonnes of motor spirit were delivered for inland consumption in the United Kingdom. This is an increase of just under 5 per cent. on the 1975 figure. The budget increase in road fuel duty is expected to reduce motor spirit consumtion by about 1 to 2 per cent. in 1977–78 below what it would otherwise have been and by substantially more in later years.
