HL Deb 28 September 1976 vol 374 cc385-6WA
Lord O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether during their presidency of the Council of Ministers of the EEC, they will ensure that the tax authorities of all Member States treat the travel and expense allowances of members of the European Parliament in the same way.

Lord JACQUES

No. The United Kingdom tax rule is that if allowances exceed necessary expenditure a charge to tax is made on the excess. Other countries have different tax systems and different rules. But the Government see no reason why the United Kingdom rule should not apply to members of the European Parliament who are subject to United Kingdom tax.
