HC Deb 21 October 1976 vol 917 cc556-7W
Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many, and what percentage, of the United Kingdom work force works more than 21 hours a week, between 16 and 21 hours a week, between eight and 16 hours a week, and less than eight hours a week, respectively.

Mr. Golding

Information is not available in the form requested. The following New Earnings Survey results relate to employees belonging to PAYE schemes, other than private domestic servants and some other small categories, employed within Great Britain in April 1975 and who were expected to work a specific number of hours, other than overtime, in a normal week. Where an individual had more than one such job the hours for different jobs were not added together. Information about the remainder of the work force is not available, but many of them probably worked for not more than 21 hours per week.

Males Females
Expected to work: per cent. per cent.
More than 21 hours per week 98.4 83.7
More than 16 hours but under 21 hours per week 0.8 10.4
More than 8 but under 16 hours per week 0.5 4.6
8 hours or less per week 0.3 1.3

These estimates are subject to sampling errors and are based on Table 29 in Part A of the publication New Earnings Survey 1975.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) of those employees who work between eight and 16 hours a week, how many and what percentage, are estimated to have been continuously employed at their jobs for at least five years;

(2) how many and what percentage of the United Kingdom work force he estimates are employed on a temporary basis; and what is the average period of such temporary employment.
