Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he has any plans to introduce legislation to amend the Employment Protection Act in order to prevent unions which are not members of the TUC from obtaining certificates of independence.

Mr. Harold Walker

As my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Industry announced on 29th July during the course of the debate on the Third Reading of the Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Bill, the Government are considering the need for changes in the current legislation relating to the certification of independence of trade unions. We are consulting the main interested organisations, and when we have received their advice we will decide what needs to be done.
