HC Deb 21 October 1976 vol 917 c504W
25. Mr. Stanbrook

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement as to the violence at a public meeting organised by the NCCL in Manchester on 30th November 1975, which resulted in injuries being suffered by persons present and as to why, although several arrests were made, no one has been charged with offences arising out of the incident.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The Chief Constable of Greater Manchester tells me that a full report of the police inquiry was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who advised that the evidence in the case was insufficient to justify the institution of criminal proceedings. The Director also said that on the evidence available to him it did not seem that the police could in any way justifiably be blamed for the lack of evidence.
