asked Her Majesty's Government:

Of the total prison population (at the latest available date) how many are in open and how many in closed establishments; and whether there are any vacancies in open prisons and if so how many.

Lord HARRIS of GREENWICH

On 15th September, (the latest date for which information is available) the total prison population in England and Wales was 41,447; of these, 5,315 persons were accommodated in open establishments, and 36,132 in closed establishments. On the same date, vacancies in open prisons were 148 (male) and 45 (female).
