Of the total prison population (at the latest available date) how many are in open and how many in closed establishments; and whether there are any vacancies in open prisons and if so how many.
§ Lord HARRIS of GREENWICHOn 15th September, (the latest date for which information is available) the total prison population in England and Wales was 41,447; of these, 5,315 persons were accommodated in open establishments, and 36,132 in closed establishments. On the same date, vacancies in open prisons were 148 (male) and 45 (female).
