Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the amount paid out in each of the last five years for grants and loans for village halls under the Physical Training and Recreation Act 1937.

Mr. McElhone

Since 1st September 1971 all the new offers of capital grant which my Department has made to local voluntary youth and community organisations for social and recreational facilities have been made under the Further Education (Scotland) Regulations 1959. The Department has paid the following capital grants to such organisations to provide or improve village halls and community centres:

£
1971–72 46,923
1972–73 62,801
1973–74 67,881
1974–75 149,046
1975–76 233,854

My right hon. Friend has no power to make loans under either the 1959 regulations or the 1937 Act. The amount of the grants paid by local authorities is not centrally available.
