HC Deb 22 November 1976 vol 919 c892W
Mr. Madden

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the latest estimate of total taxes unrecoverable from British taxpayers leaving the United Kingdom without settling their tax arreas; and how many British citizens are involved.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I regret that the information is not available in the form requested. However in the accounting year ending in October 1975, tax amounting to £2,406,153 was written off as irrecoverable in cases where the taxpayer was known to have gone abroad. It is not known how many of these defaulting taxpayers were British citizens.
