HL Deb 22 November 1976 vol 377 c1752WA
Lord MOLSON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What they estimate would be the saving to the Royal Mint if it were to discontinue the minting of halfpennies.

Lord JACQUES

There would be no saving to the Mint, who under the Trading Fund arrangements are paid by the Treasury to produce the United Kingdom coinage. The Treasury receive face value from the clearing banks, and, since this is more than the cost, no saving would result if minting were discontinued.
